Phone Savvy

I change mobile phones as often as I change clothes. High end cell phone accessories are like Kleenex – just throw them after use. Most women collect shoes, I collect custom cell phone skins. Indeed, I am obsessed with cell phones.

It all started with crystal cell phone covers which were all the rage way back when. I remembered staring with new found wonder at my friend’s Swarovski encrusted phone. She had one of those generic looking soap bar type phones, nothing compared to the inch-thick flip mobile phone I had at that time, but it glimmered like no other under the slightest hint of light. Its sparkle was nearly blinding. I was in awe, to say the least. Perhaps sensing my amusement she gave me the privilege to hold the sparkly phone and my, did I cradle it like a precious baby in my hands. That very day I went to the nearest phone accessories shop to get myself that prized crystal cover.

You well know what they say about beauty – it has its sacrifices. My phone sure was a beauty with a rainbow of colors bouncing off its crystal surface, but the fancy cover made it hard for me to hear whoever was on the other end of the line whenever I made calls. I acted oblivious to the discomfort for a while until I thought of it as an excuse to buy a new unit. Apparently the colorful semiprecious stones were glued, piece by piece, that taking them off would ruin the entire exterior of my phone. Off with a new gadget I go.

I did not learn from my past experience and I continued to buy mobile phone accessories that were nothing but that – just plain and simple add-ons that had no practical use whatsoever. I’d know when to get a certain accessory and stick it right onto my phone – when I get a panic attack at the mere sight of it. As they say, whatever gets you off. Pricey clear protectors for my Blackberry (Curve 8500, Bold 9700 and Storm2 9550), hand-painted silicon cases for my iPhone (2G, 3G and 3Gs) and animal print covers for my Nexus One. The choices were endless as the limit on my dad’s Visa.

Quite intense my liking is for mobile phones and their fancy accessories that I would easily trade in my LV monogram canvas collection or my rows of barely-used Louboutins and Manolos alike for a mobile phone model that hasn’t been released in the market for the rest of the tech-savvy population to consume. Nexus One is the latest smartphone, right?
