It is safe to say that most, if not all of us, are guilty of some fashion crime. My personal offense was wearing rubber slippers whilst out on the town. There’s no point in denying that I was once a rubber sandal fanatic. Up to this day there are at least twenty rubber flip flops lodged somewhere in the muddle that is my shoe closet.
I have fallen prey to the whole Brazilian flip flop mania in the past. I still have a clear recall of how I was victimized by many a corrupt flip flop supplier what with their ridiculously priced footwear that were sold all over. In the not so distant past, I would waste a week’s worth of allowance on a pair or two of the awfully casual footwear. There was many a meal skipped just so I would have enough money for branded rubber slippers by week’s or month’s end. Wholesale sandals did not quite make the cut; I had to have the branded kind that was pretty much revered as a status symbol by my generation.
I was on the brink of obsession buying every style of this famous imported flip flop brand. I updated my flip flop collection as a slave to fashion would her wardrobe with the changing of seasons. Whenever there was a new design out in the market, I couldn’t keep still until I got my hands on said “it” pair. I lived in my flip flops, going about town with the soles of my feet comfortably nestled on rubber.
Be it in school, in the mall or at the beach, my flip flops stayed glued on my feet. If I missed a pedicure session, I would make sure my bottom wear was long enough to cover my unkempt toenails. I was oblivious to mom’s incessant warnings that my footwear of my choice was inappropriate for most occasions. I couldn’t possible trade in my flip flops for sneakers or any other shoe style that would hide my feet from the rest of the world. At that time it didn’t matter whether I was going clubbing or going to mass, I was still going to slip my feet into slippers and nothing else.
In the summer of my flip flop crazed year, I flew to the States with a whole lot of family and friends for the choir’s California Tour. Apparently the flip flop biz in the USA wasn’t as thriving as that in our country. Every fashion brand had slippers that sold for as low as a dollar a pair. I flown to flip flop heaven and back what with the cheap rubber slippers within arms reach at street corner.
I grew out of my flip flop phase at some point. You can no longer spot me sporting rubber slippers in public, but at the beach, and I don’t think I’ll ever go back to wearing horribly casual footwear such as flip flops again.
