Since moving to my condominium unit in a posh skyscraper situated in urban California, I’ve kept myself busy with books and magazines that feature tones and shades appropriate for small home fixtures such as my custom kitchen cabinetry.

My penchant for woodworking in Southern California began when a team of artisans introduced me to their intricate custom woodworking design, which was like no other. I’m no stranger to custom built in cabinetry, as I grew up in a home that is complemented with elegant wooden pieces that even without the costly vases of mom strewn on every polished plank, you would appreciate the quintessence of her wooden furniture.

I, however, only started taking cabinetry in Southern California seriously when I purchased my first house in Toland Way, LA. Since it was a big property, I invested my hard-earned money on armoires, vanity tables and kitchen cabinets that came in different styles and wood materials. Of all wood types, I would single out mahogany as it exudes elegance and the warmth of home. Besides, the color of this wood is perfect for big houses like the one I used to own.

Unfortunately, the recession period forced me to leave and sell what I used to call home for the past 10 years. I left that house with a heavy heart, but part of me was excited to start a new life in the 60 sq m condominium space, which I initially wanted to rent out. However, losing my house leaves me now with no other option but to call the condo my new home. Besides, I figure it’s not such a bad place to live in what with its wonderful ventilation and the woodworking team did a great job on my fixtures. They left it bare though, as I haven’t made up my mind yet on the color or colors to splash on these products of brilliance and creativity.

According to design books, it would be ideal to paint your furniture pieces with lighter tones if your space is small as this gives the illusion of space. I’m currently playing with the idea of yellow, off-white, powder blue, or peach – all light and neutral shades that will enhance the features of my wooden pieces.

The again, what if I leave the pieces as they are? They are, after all, made of oak and teak, types of wood that are yellowish in color and possessing characteristics that can be described as neutral and beautiful as they are.
