The term "Psychiatry" was coined by Doctor J.C. Reil from Germany at the beginning of the XIX century. Psychiatry is a science that studies and treats mental illnesses.
A lot of mental disorders can be treated by a professional.
Mental health professionals work all over the world. Psychiatrists help mentally ill people to overcome depression, treat insomnia etc. There are a great many mental disorders and phobias that require specialist medical aid.
Among the commonest mental disorders are sleeplessness, anxiety disorders, panic disorders, abnormally high pressure moods, various personality disorders.
One of the commonest mental illnesses these days is Anorexia. It begins when a person starves intentionally or eats less to lose weight. However, starving leads to a compete loss of appetite and adverse health problems, such as infertility in women.
SCHIZOPHRENIA is another severe mental illness. It has been studied by psychiatrists for years. People suffering from the disorder percept the reality differently. Bizarre delusions, abnormal speech, disorganized thinking pattern, paranoia are typical of schizophrenic patients. Schizophrenic people normally suffer from severe depressions and anxiety disorders. Schizophrenics have a shorter lifespan than mentally healthy people. One of the reasons is a high rate of suicides among schizophrenics. Though it is not passed from a parent to a child, Schizophrenia is recorded to affect family members.
Substance abuse, including hard drugs, alcohol, remains a common problem to be treated by psychiatrists. Social problems, for instance unemployment, poor living conditions and homelessness, are often recorded, too.
PSYCHIATRY handles mental illnesses that are resulted from chemical imbalances in the brain. The way people think, their beliefs, their culture and experience, life situations and many other things shape up their psyche that may be severely challenged because of circumstances. A psychiatrist is to renew the hampered balance through a specialist aid and medications. This process is time-consuming and requires a lot of effort.
