Barely anyone is unaware of the term 'mass media'. Everyday we use the media sources to learn the latest domestic and foreign news, find necessary information, to entertain or to listen to the weather. The importance of mass media today is vast. Mass media play a large role in forming and reflecting public opinion, connecting people and the world. The media strongly influence society, as it can reach a wide audience. They include four major sources: TV, press, radio and the Internet.
Daily millions of newspapers and glossy magazines are published around the world. The number of them seems unlimited. There are various international and local papers, dailies and weeklies, quality papers that cater for the better educated readers and popular newspapers that sell to a much larger readership. Some papers give prominance to politics, finance and commerce; while others cover upon 'human interest stories'.
The advent of radio made it possible for a larger audience of people to get access to the latest news. Radio is preferable when you are at work and need information or have to concentrate your attention on something else. Hence, we normally switch on the radio when driving a car to listen to the newsflash and reports presented live at the scene. Listeners are particularly much into phone-in talk-shows and music charts.
According to estimates, the majority of people regard television as their main source of information. Our everyday life is frequently arranged according to the programme schedule. We turn it on to view our favourite sitcoms and chat-shows, to watch newly released movies, music videos and news programmes.
Whereas TV broadcasts are scheduled, the Web allows us to have access to information and amusement 24/7. The Web contains huge databanks of information in all languages. It is well-known for the selection of opinions presented, vast collections of tracks and movies, e-encyclopaedias designed to ease the search on the Internet, e-books and websites of newspapers and magazines.
Life without mass media would be monotonous and limited. Still, 'addiction' to some sources of entertainment, such as viewing TV and surfing the Internet for hours, can have a bad influence upon well-being and interpersonal communication.
