I cannot blame her for her hobby. My mother is fond of collecting cabinets and not only that. Me, jealous? Of course not, I fully understand her.

One day, my mother attended a meeting for parents and teachers held in our school. As the meeting proceeded, my classmates and I played on the school grounds. Later, as my mom walked out from the classroom along with the other mothers and teachers, I overheard the other mothers insisting that they go to our place for “bonding” purposes. My mother, trapped in the situation, couldn’t manage to say “no”.

So, on our way to our humble home we call “palace”, all the mothers chatted away as though there was no tomorrow. Finally, we got to our place and mom opened the iron gates to welcome our guests.

They went about our living area, dining space and kitchen. As soon as the other mothers saw mom’s kitchen cabinets, they expressed admiration for it. Some of them seemed genuinely interested in mom’s collection while others appeared envious while inspecting and feeling each custom cabinet.

While our parents were busy looking over the wooden stuff, I invited my classmates to come and play in my room. They saw my wide collection of Gundam Wing robots, Ferrari cars, and Boeing fighter planes. They could hardly get their bewildered round eyes off my toys. Bingo, my closest friend, asked where I got all my amazing toys and I replied, “My uncle gave them to me because I am a good boy. And if I continue being good, he said he’ll give me some more.”

After having said that, I realized it’s not only my mother who has a collection. I, too, have my own. Soon after our guests have gone home, I realized I have just rubbed off my fascination for unconventional toys to my classmates, the same way that my mom has influenced other mothers to start collecting their own custom cabinets.
