She’s one of the best painters in West Vancouver. How can I ever amount to that? I drowned my thoughts in a tall glass of Peppermint Patty milkshake. She had a svelte body dressed in paint-splattered coveralls, swingy hair perhaps pulled up in a messy bun and eyes like a wolf on the prowl. I could only conjure images of her – and him.

He’s behind many a grand painting in North Vancouver. How can I ever be good for him? I let go of my worries into a huge bowl of crackling pork noodles in laksa curry. He had a lean body fashioned after Adonis, golden locks that fell to his shoulders in soft waves and eyes like an eagle in search of prey. I could only think of memories of him – and her.

She saw him at the convention, that grand one in Burnaby. He was invited to wow everyone with his latest project. What else but a painting in Burnaby. He walked up to the podium, charming every guest with each stride. She had her eyes on him the whole time. Those wolf eyes. He took notice, who wouldn’t?

He met her at another grand event, the annual one in Langley. She was asked to speak in front of the huge crowd and present her plans. It couldn’t be anything but a brilliant painting in Langley. She took her place on the stage, captivating the audience all the while. He couldn’t take his eyes off her. Those eagle eyes. She noticed him, how could she possibly not.

They were together ever since. Many an impressive painting in Vancouver was of their making. Together they made beautiful art as they made beautiful love. Everyone knew about them, the lovely couple who made lovely works. Everywhere people talked about their talent which was second to none, or so most people believed. Everyday I would shun the hearsays, the rumors, the many stories they starred in.

I was no one compared to her and nobody when next to him. I had no works I can talk of for people to take a good listen. Conventions and annual gatherings of professionals were never my thing, perhaps because I was never invited to any. People don’t usually get awestruck by my mere presence. No one’s eyes are on me when I’m out and about. People just don’t take notice. Not even her, not even him.

I am the wife. I convinced myself. Not even I could convince me well enough.
