My dad is the best dad in the world. I grew-up playing with his residential architectural designs. I remember him coming home every night. He’ll kiss my mom first then me and my sister. We will have dinner together and will talk about the trivialities of the day. He would play or watch cartoon with us for thirty minutes then he will proceed in his small office opening-up to our terrace. There he will stay for most of the nights drawing in his desk, calculating things I don’t understand before. There are nights when my sister and I would quarrel as to would climb to his lap and watch him measure and draw. Sometimes he will teach us what he is doing or sometimes he’ll just let us sit in his lap and watch him work. Those are the nights when everything is just square, rectangle, circle, numbers, smile and milk.
As we grow-up and reach our teenage years, we can no longer sit in my dad’s lap anymore due to our size but we still sit in his office and do our homework beside him. We will talk about residential structural engineering, politics in general, how he met our mother, what he planned for us in the future and even boys we like. My dad was never that strict. He believes in free loving and trust. For as long as we don’t get hurt that much or we are not crossing any boundaries, he will just sit, watch us from afar and let us experience life as it is. He says experiencing pain is part of life. Only through it will we learn. Pain is a blessing from God in as much as happiness is so we need not fear pain.
Remembering all these as I ride my taxi going to airport, I felt tears streaming down my cheeks. I can’t believe I chose to study far from my family but my dad believes in good education provided by Ivy League schools. Besides he was so proud of me when I finally got accepted to Dartmouth so I shouldn’t feel bad about leaving. Anyway, my dad promised me that their going to visit me every chance they got so I shouldn’t be worrying. Still, I feel homesick already. I wish the semester ends already so I can go home.
