It all started with home renovation. My roof was in such bad condition after the winter storm that I needed to get hold of a professional roofing contractor in Massachusetts. After days of searching all over for affordable roofing contractors in Massachusetts, I finally found an all-around construction company that not only does roofing but also room renovations and masonry in MA. Thinking my house could also use a few other upgrades, I set a date with the company’s point person for him to have an initial walk-in
I wasn’t expecting a lean-bodied, six-foot-three demi-god to show up at my doorstep on the day of the walk-in. The demi-god sure wasn’t expecting to see me as well as it took some time for him to respond when I asked him if he was the person sent by the construction company. Call me love-struck, but I let him in anyway without actually hearing what he said. He could’ve been a thief and I would’ve let him in anyway.
Turned out demi-god wasn’t the point person of the construction company I contacted. He was Larry, my new next-door neighbor, who wanted to get familiar with the rest of the ‘hood. What was supposed to be a short meet-and-greet turned into an oh-too-engaging conversation over coffee. We started seeing each other after that first encounter and I, too, was surprised by how quickly we warmed up to each other.
What I found weird was that whenever I asked him if we could go hang out at his place, he’d suddenly remember he had some important errand to run. For the record, he always had some excuse as to why we can’t stay at his place – he has his parents over for the weekend, there were basement/bedroom/ bathroom renovations in MA going on, there was a gas leak what-have-you.
Maybe it was stupid of me to not see the oh-too-clear picture right away; that he wasn’t who he was claiming he was. I had a pretty strong feeling he was from the construction company and not from next-door that I asked him what his thoughts were on kitchen renovations in Massachusetts and, boy did I get a full-blown account of the whole process.
To set things straight, I went over to his place one day without him knowing and was surprised to see a woman by the door. I demanded to see him, the owner of the house, but the woman insisted that she was the owner. I described to her what Larry looked like and she pointed up to the roof with a quizzical look. Lo and behold, there was Larry measuring her roof as if prepping for a repair. Why, our lies manage to catch up on us.
