New Floors for the New Year

Topping my New Year’s list was having a change of lifestyle – from living in luxury to living a simple life. I started with my wardrobe, setting up garage sales to rid my closet of unnecessary designer garb. Next was beauty which meant lesser trips to the spa and salon resulting to more visible roots and chipped nail polish. The hardest part was perhaps restyling my home in line with the ‘simple living’ theme. I tried to invest in more eco-friendly pieces that were easy to maintain and relatively cheaper.

I was advised to have gradual home remodeling starting with the flooring. In trying to stick with my out with the old in with the new mantra, I canvassed for new floors in North Shore and had a flooring installation done in my Chicago home complete with floor sanding by Chicago experts. I had my custom marble floors removed in place for wood floors from Chicago. Hardwood flooring from Chicago was relatively low-maintenance, said my interior designer. She provided some basic tips on how to care for my new wooden flooring.

• Regularly sweep and vacuum to keep the floor from having scratches caused by accumulated dirt and grime. Scratches can be avoided by making sure that the wheels of your vacuum cleaner are clean so they won’t cause any damage. Also, use one with a felt or brush head.
• For cleaning spills use only a soft cloth and wipe dry the spill right away
• Water can cause damage to hardwood floors. Check the wax or soap you use to clean wood and avoid those with silicon and lemon as these are rather harsh elements that could damage your flooring.
• Scratches and dents on wood flooring are easily visible so put protective covers or pads under your furniture so that whenever you move them they won’t mess up the floor. When you have pets that freely roam around the house, make sure that you trim their nails and clean their paws to keep the floor intact.
• Rugs aren’t both decorative and useful. Place them in frequently passed areas of your home such as room entries and stair landings. Dirt accumulation at door entrances can be lessened if you put door mats.
• Spiky heels make you look good but not your wooden floor. Be extra cautious when walking in your sky-high stilettos as they may cause hard to remove scratches on the floor. If you move about the house in your Manolos, do so with much care. It’s a good way to practice proper walking in heels as it is a good way of caring for your flooring.

I can hardly wait for the next remodeling project. I hope I stick to this change of lifestyle project. Wish me luck!
