It wasn’t out of prudence or out of love for the environment. I’m not sure what made my wife get one of those eco-and-budget-friendly brand new mobile homes in CA. I already had plans to contact home builders but she beat me to the task of getting us a roof over our heads by making arrangements with mobile home dealers.

Honestly, a house on wheels wasn’t my first choice. Having a mobile home did not appeal to me as much as having a manufactured home from sales all-over town or a custom made house I designed myself. Not to be thought of as egotistical, I agreed to meet with retailers of mobile homes from AZ to LA. It was all part of canvassing for a home, quoting my wife.

In the end I agreed to move in to a quaint little house on wheels. Being the self-proclaimed handyman that I was, I tried a few DIY tips I got from owners of used mobile homes in LA whom we met whilst looking for the perfect home. Here are their top tips that would keep any mobile home in tiptop shape.

• Keeping your house leveled is the most important factor in setting up. Over time you have to adjust the leveling of your home. Signs that you have to do some adjustments are squeaky floors, doors and windows that are left ajar most of the time and cracks in the walls and ceilings. Kits are available in hardware stores for those tool-savvy owners but you can always call a professional to level your home.
• Close up holes around your home immediately before they could cause further damage. The skirting of the home is necessary in keeping the belly of your home protected. At the onset of damage, put tape on the inside of the small hole and coat it with caulk. Smooth it out with a paint scraper and do the whole process again if necessary. In choosing caulk, get a color that is close to your current skirting.
• Cleaning the exterior of a mobile home is different from that of a conventional house. Having a power washer handy could ensure a more efficient cleaning job. If you’re using the said equipment for the first time, read and follow the instructions carefully before attempting to get it anywhere near your siding. You can also scrub your home’s siding manually by attaching a scrubber or sponge to the end of a (long) mop handle.
• Painting vinyl drywalls and grooved paneling which are common in mobile homes is a bit challenging. Using faux paint techniques on vinyl-covered drywalls in recommendable. As for grooved paneling, the four basic steps are sanding, buffing, priming and painting. Best to ask professional advice though especially if you have little painting know-how.
• Find the counter part of Bath & Beyond or any specialized home center for mobile home owners. Visit supply outlets online if there’s no easily accessible mobile home supply store.
