During the colonial times, irrigation in Calgary or rather what is now modern Calgary, Alberta in Canada was somewhat a problem back then. Now it may seem strange that Calgary would have a problem with irrigation since it is located near the vicinity of two rivers, the Bow River which runs from west to south and the Elbow River which runs north to south and converges on the Row River in the center of the modern city.

One of the many problems that the first settlers have encountered is that the climate was generally dry and no dense plant life usually grew in other areas except the river valleys. This would not do since as Calgary is now the third most populous city in Canada, an extensive irrigation system in Calgary must have been placed. Historically, primary or rudimentary irrigation systems in Calgary have been dependent on the two rivers Bow and Elbow but since the advent of diesel engines, more and more water have been drawn to spread around with much ease.

Nowadays, because of the abundance of irrigated water, local farms can now depend on home grown Calgary underground sprinklers anytime as a result of the systems established long ago. The wonders of machinery may have long surpassed our physical abilities but not our mental faculties. I wonder if the underground sprinkler in Calgary could have survived and prospered if not for the ingenuity of human thinking.

Traditionally, Calgary has depended on oil and gas for a living and farming was only a necessity to support the population living in the area. Located between the Canadian Rockies and the Canadian Prairies, the land seemed ideal to contain vast quantities of oil and gas and surprisingly was not discovered until 1902. Furthermore, Calgary and Alberta in general never really became a player in the oil and gas industry until the huge reserves were discovered in 1947. Coupled with it the short collapse of Middle Eastern oil through the Arab oil embargo, Calgary found itself transforming from a small town to a skyscraper laden cosmopolitan metropolis. The city, literally dependent on oil, petered out in the economic collapse of the 1980s and unemployment was at an all time high during those years. The low oil prices prevented an economic comeback from the city until the 1990s. Realizing it could net depend solely on oil and gas alone, the city has now grown with diversity on offering different resources and different utilities to prevent a repeat of the economic disasters of the past?
