PUT IT IN WRITING.
People who would like to make a considerable change normally are far more successful when they put it in writing. So, note down all the reasons why you would like to quit smoking. Keep that list where you can see it, and add to it new reasons as they come up to your mind.
GETTING MORAL SUPPORT.
People whose friends and family help them give up smoking are more likely to succeed. If you are reluctant to tell your parents or family members that you are a smoker, make certain your friends know, and turn to them for help.
Set a stop date. Choose a day when you'll quit smoking. Inform your friends (and your family members, if they know you are a smoker) that you're going to stop smoking on that day. Just think of that day as a dividing line between the smoking you and the new and improved nonsmoker you'll become.
Get rid of your cigarettes — all of your cigarettes. People can't quit smoking with cigarettes still around to tempt them.
FIGURE OUT YOUR TRIGGERS
You probably know when you feel like lighting up, such as after meals, when you're at your best friend's house, when drinking coffee, or while driving. These situations are your triggers for smoking — when you're in them, it feels automatic to light as cigarette. As soon as you've figured out your triggers, try out the following tips:
- Stay away from these situations. For example, if you smoke when you drive, get a lift to work, walk, or take the bus for a few weeks. If you usually smoke after meals, do something else after you have had a meal, such as read a magazine or telephone a friend.
- Change the place. If you and your friends commonly smoke in restaurants or order takeout and eat in the motor vehicle, suggest that you sit in the no-smoking section the next time you go out to eat.
Note that even one puff of a cigarette can lead to a relapse.
Should you begin smoking again, do not give up. Set up a new quit date. Go on trying.
