There are many diet programs around today with many different nutritional strategies. Low carb, high protein, and balanced nutritional plans for example. One thing that can make any of these programs even more effective is exercise. Exercise is one of the most powerful weapons you could have in your weight loss arsenal yet so many people tend to either ignore or avoid it. This is due perhaps to the lack of awareness of what exercise can do for you in your quest to shed the weight. Here are some of the benefits that can be had from adding exercise to your diet program.

First of all exercise improves your cardiovascular function. This in turn improves your breathing and lung capacity which allows you to take more oxygen into your body which helps you burn fat. How does it do this? It helps you burn fat because oxygen causes your body to produce a type of sugar called glycogen. This in turn creates something at the cellular level called ATP which is the main source of muscular energy for the entire body. This process that manufactures energy for the body burns fat and sugar. Your body is constantly burning fat for this purpose whether you exercise or not. But, if you want to burn even more fat, you obviously have to find a way to get more oxygen into your body. Exercise is the best way to do this. Exercise allows you a greater capacity to take in large amounts of oxygen. This in turn results in higher oxygen levels in your body which causes an increase in the rate at which fat is burned.

Some fad diet products and weight loss scams advertise that their product will burn calories that you ordinarily would not or could not. How healthy for you are these products? I don't know of any that are designed for regular use over a long period of time. You can burn calories through exercise that you ordinarily would not or could not also and it can be incorporated into your daily schedule without the fear that perhaps it is something that might be undermining your health. Speaking of burning calories.

Did you know that you burn calories when you are sleeping? It's true. And, if your metabolism is boosted from a good workout during the day it will stay boosted at night as well. This will increase the calorie burning that occurs naturally. Also, getting a good nights sleep will help keep certain hormones in check that can wreak havoc in your body. One is Cortisol. The other is called Ghrelin. Cortisol is a stress hormone that has been directly associated with increases in belly fat. When Cortisol levels rise, fat loss virtually stops. Ghrelin is the hormone that makes you feel hungry. When you don't get the right amount of sleep, levels of both of these hormones rise.

The third hormone in this equation is called Leptin. It's job is to tell us when we have eaten enough. When we don't get enough sleep, Leptin levels decrease. So increased cortisol makes you stop losing fat. The increased Ghrelin keeps telling you that you're hungry and since the Leptin levels have been decreased there is not enough to tell you when you have eaten enough. This is where regular exercise is a huge help. Regular exercise helps you be more relaxed in general and as a result in a better mood. It also gives you a general sense of wellness and as a result helps you get the right amount of sleep so that you don't have those hormonal imbalances that could sabotage your diet plans.

Resistance training exercise also helps you burn calories. The types of resistance training are bodyweight exercises and weight training. One reason they help you burn calories is because the result of resistance training is building lean muscle. Muscle tissue is very active metabolically. That means that muscle tissue requires calories to be maintained. Lean muscle mass will allow a person to burn calories while being completely at rest. Fat tissue requires a significantly lower number of calories to be maintained. About three times lower than muscle tissue. It is primarily a store of tissue for emergencies. There have been a number of different studies done to determine how many calories a pound of lean muscle tissue will burn at rest. The results from these studies have ranged anywhere from 6 to 7 calories per day up to 35 calories per day. Although 6 to 7 calories isn't much, it adds up significantly in proportion to how much lean muscle mass you gain. So adding some lean muscle through resistance type exercise, whether its body weight exercises or weight training will definitely be an asset to you in achieving your weight loss goals.

After all of the previous being said, I think it's clear that instead of trying the latest fad diet product or one of the weight loss scams out there today, starting an exercise program is a much better choice. That's because exercise is good for your health, enhances what already goes on in your body in terms of burning calories and will probably be much cheaper too. And, no matter which of the many diet programs you choose, you can make it more effective with exercise.
