A diet is normally the first thing that an individual will turn to when it is high time to lose weight. A diet is about changing eating habits. A balanced diet contains large amounts of fruit and vegetables, whole grains and low-fat diary products, and modest amounts of lean meat, poultry and fish. The healthy diet contrasts to the so-called crash diets that promise miraculous results at a quick rate. Still, most crash diets are unhealthy, since they mean starvation. The downside of crash diets is that the body loses a lot of fluids and muscle tissue. These are the two key ingredients that the body needs to burn body fat. If you go on a crash diet, you may see a substantially large weight loss at first. Being deficient in vitamins, protein, fats and carbohydrates, your body becomes sensitive to viruses and bacteria. Besides, because your metabolism (the chemical process by which food is changed into energy) is in starvation mode, it becomes increasingly hard to burn body fat. Hence, most dieters give up. To lose weight permanently, it is necessary to change your food consumption.
The good thing is that you do not have to give up your favorite "comfort foods" in order to eat right. Instead, substitute ingredients to make foods healthier. For example, substitute regular sour cream with its fat-free counterpart. Eat low-fat ground turkey instead of ground beef in a meatloaf recipe.
Fresh fruit or vegetables from home, for instance, are far healthier than that vending machine bar of chocolate.
If you are eating out, select smaller specials, share large servings or take home part of your meal for the following day.
Stay away from high-calorie foods low in vitamins and minerals, including candy, soft drinks, chips etc.
Note that no smart eating program is successful without regular physical exercise.
