Dr. Arnold Kegel was the first to develop a set of exercises to exercise the pelvis, in particular pubococcygeus muscles (PC muscles). The muscles are involved in urination, bowel movements, sexual intercourse and, in women, during labour.
The pelvic floor muscles can be adversely affected by pregnancy, labor, extra weight, aging, a chronic cough, a genetic predisposition to weak connective tissue. In men, weakening of the pelvic floor muscles can also bring on premature ejaculation. The weakened pelvic floor muscles can bring on a decrease in ability to climax in both males and females.
Hence, Kegel exercises are used for various purposes. This type of exercises should be the "first line" of a management programme to handle stress or incontinence. The pc muscles engaged by this type of exercises include the anal and urinary sphincter. In males, the exercises can "lift" the testicles. It may take a few weeks to see a significant improvement, but some men observe their testicles lifting promptly.
Like any muscle of the body, the pelvic floor muscles, if not engaged or "worked out" frequently, become weak and finally atrophy. Post-menopausal females normally suffer from vaginal atrophy.
In women, lack of muscle tone in the area can lead to vaginal or uterine prolapse, also known as fallen womb.
The conditions can cause discomfort and at times need surgical treatment. But, the major cause is a collapse of the pelvic floor which keeps the inner organs in place.
Kegel exercises can preclude these conditions and can be helpful in treating them, as well.
To insure you are well aware how to contract the pc muscles, try to stop the urine stream while you are going to the washroom. If you manage to do this, you have got the basic movement. Or try another method: insert a finger into your vagina and try to compress the surrounding muscles. You should be able to feel your vagina tighten and your pelvic floor move upwards. Afterwards relax your muscles and feel your pelvic floor move down to the starting position.
