There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 occurs when the body does not produce insulin at all. People with type 2 either do not have enough insulin, or their cells ignore the insulin they have. About 95% of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes. It is differently called "non-insulin dependent" or "adult-onset" diabetes. Left untreated, diabetes can result in blindness, nerve and blood vessel damage that leads to foot or leg amputation, heart attack, stroke, kidney failure and death.
KNOW YOUR RISK
You are at high risk of type 2 diabetes, if it runs in your family. Type 2 diabetes is much more often observed in ethnic minority groups. If the kid you gave birth to weighed more than 9 pounds and/or if you had gestational diabetes while you were pregnant, you are also at higher risk of developing diabetes. Males and Females in their mid 40s and older are in the risk group, too.
ALTER WHAT YOU CAN
Unfortunately, you cannot do anything to change your age, ethnicity or family history, but there are some factors that you can control. Your diabetes risk also raises if:
• You are corpulent.
• You do not take exercise regularly.
• You have an unhealthy diet.
If you know you are at risk, making good choices about nutrition and exercise can help you stay healthy. Studies have demonstrated that sticking to a nutritious diet and taking exercise can prevent or deter type 2 diabetes.
If you are fat, note that an excessive weight gain is the single most crucial risk factor for type 2 diabetes. According to the recent studies, 80%- 90% of people with diabetes are fat. Losing weight and keeping it off can help keep diabetes at bay. Eat a variety of products, including those containing a lot of fiber, such as whole grains, vegetables and fruits. Try to consume less than 30% of your daily calories from fat. Also, watch your portion.
Keep in mind that any amount of physical activity is much better than none. Ride an exercise bicycle while you watch the evening news or your favorite talk-show. Most of all, make sure you find an activity that appeals to you, so you will do it regularly.
By being well-aware of your risk factors and getting into the habit of consuming healthy foods and exercising, you can take control of your health and well-being.
