Practically everybody loves these edibles that offer the body nothing but waste.
When the recession hit, people started to cut down on junk food, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, and other whims to focus on the basic stuff. You don’t serve potato chips for dinner neither would you serve ice cream for breakfast. Families found it imperative to purchase cheap canned food while USA restaurants and pastry shop owners went to seek cheap suppliers of coconut milk and water, so they can continue serving yummy cakes, tarts and other sweet concoctions amid the economic downturn for fear of their business closing down due to deteriorating sales.
Manufacturers of cheap fruit juices in the USA, on the other hand, have become in demand, as they used the situation to improve their products everyday lest they see their clients turn to Asian manufacturers.
Recession really has a funny way of changing people’s ways. Just a month ago, my friend said she’s turned deaf to her children’s constant demand for glazed bagels for breakfast. Now, she smiles as she tells me they’ve learned to appreciate the fruit jam from a USA manufacturer of export goods. Her husband happens to work there and his boss would occasionally let him bring home some goodies; those that have exceeded the required quota for the day.
From being a staple on the dining table, bread became an occasional treat as rice took its place in USA homes. One can cook rice in many ways and it is undeniably much cheaper than bread. Those who are accustomed to eating rice for breakfast, lunch and dinner don’t have to adjust to anything, but the bread folks consider this an ordeal.
Sacrifices must be made by everybody in order to survive in this recession period. I don’t discount what economists say that the public should continue spending in order for the country’s economy to get back on track. True enough. But before they can think of their participation in this area, they have first to consider the hungry stomachs of their families. And there’s no other way to make ends meet than through thriftiness.
