to be re-released. What once permeated the airwaves were commercials and celebrity reviews of this innovative console have now been dismissed with nasty criticism towards Microsoft for running out so rapidly. Some feel this is just a sleazy marketing plan to try and buildup the hype of the console. Others seem to be more compassionate of the barricade involved in releasing a brand new piece of hardware in large quantities.
Rather than of reaching a decision right away let's take a look at both arguments. If you have been following this deficit at all you would associate that both sides have legitimate arguments.
To start with we will take a look at the disreputable retailing angle.
In order to appreciate why a company would do this we need to look at the past. We won't have to look to far though because this actually happens every Christmas. The one that stands out in my mind the greatest would be the tickle me elmo doll from a several years ago. This toy person was just as much in your face as the Xbox Kinect
is today. Every one had to acquire this for their children for Christmas. It was chaos at all the stores and just like the kinect the tickle me elmo doll seemed to be in lacking inventory. Then, just when most people had given up, a big amount of tickle me elmos seemed to magically arrive back on the stores shelves. The company that manufactured the plaything acted like heroes. As if they had just protected America from itself. When In reality they had this reservoir all along.
The other side of this controversy is that this takes a lot to produce this technology rapidly. We're not ranting about a few hundred thousand units. We're speaking about 5 million in projected sales by the december 31. This is no easy mountain to have to ascend. This takes very accurate outlining and delivery on Microsoft's part. You also have to be unafraid in your numbers and projections. What if you forecast for 5 million and only traffic 2 million. That's a huge omission on someone's part and that's also costing the business millions to store those consoles that they cannot ship out. This is where the plot becomes very frustrating. Do you make all 5 million in outlining of this launch or do you assemble about half and see how they sell first? Then, if sales are going in the right course you arrange the other half be produced and mailed.
It doesn't actually matter how you look at this. What it comes down to is Microsoft wasn't prepared for this launch at all. If it's a disreputable marketing plan than they failed because its only making them look bad and hurting the consumers. If it's a simple falsehood on their part, and they didn't assemble enough to start with, then they shouldn't have projected to sell 5 million by the end of the year.
