No, I haven’t always had a can-do mindset whilst sandblasting in Ontario. Way back when, there were those nights when I wished death would visit me in my sleep, days when I hoped a freak accident would come my way – anything that would give me a valid excuse to skip work. After all, work was the closest thing to Limbo. Then it just came to me one day like an epiphany, I was fretting over something I had control over.
No, there are no shortcuts, let alone roadmaps, that would get you to the top. There are no quick tips on how to land some spot high up the corporate ladder. There will always be those workdays when you’d feel stuck in Limbo – you’re not moving forward nor lagging far behind your competition. In any case, don’t think there’s just no getting around it. Three simple words are all you need to get through a tough day at work, and get to the top, at least in the long run. Lead, Think, Work.
Lead
Does ‘leading’ imply assuming a role as a strong boss? Yes and no. Yes, assume the responsibilities of a strong leader figure, over yourself that is. And no, don’t take a leadership stance and boss over those you deem weaker than yourself.
I started out as an on-the-job trainee for a company specializing in sandblasting Toronto. Naturally, I started at the bottom of the so-called corporate hierarchy. I thought to myself, I couldn’t possibly assume a leader position over my colleagues. Taking the lead, then, took the form of taking initiative. I always made myself available, voiced out my opinion when it mattered and made it clear to my superiors I was very much interested. Oh, and I walked the talk, unlike the rest of the trainees who were abundant with words but not so much in action.
Think
Everyone wants to be that employee who contributes as much ideas, at least in our Mississauga mobile sandblasting business that’s the case. So think well and think fresh. In my earlier days doing sandblasting in Mississauga, I was given pop quizzes regarding the sandblasting process. Not being one for memorizing, I thought of my own techniques on how to make work easier.
Work
What good is a sandblasting Toronto expert if he/she keeps rendering under time, worse, skipping work entirely. Need a pick-me-upper? Based on experience, promises of promotion have kept many a diligent worker highly motivated. Well, that and the promise of fame, no matter how short-lived. Being one of the pioneers, the company was still in the process of making its presence known when I was starting out. Those who were always present were included in company TVCs and print ads. You can say I had my celebrity moments.
