Vinegar: The Universal Cleaner
This is perhaps the most popular country lore. Most housecleaning people in NY would claim vinegar is effective in ridding virtually every known surface of all known dirt or stains. Problematic crayon markings on your kids’ bedroom walls, food stains on even the most delicate of fabrics or even mold and mildew bathroom and kitchen tiles, be gone! A drop or two of the universal cleaner would give you a squeaky clean finish! Not only does this sound like a cheesy line from a low-budget commercial, it also gives the same false hope. Though known to be a safe, effective and green means to clean most surfaces, vinegar can actually damage some surfaces all the while providing little or no cleaning at all. In huge portions, vinegar can also cause sensitive skin serious irritation.
Newspapers: Not Just for Reading Purposes
The daily paper is not just readily available for your reading pleasure but also for cleaning. A tabloid page can not only give you juicy news it can also give your mirrors and windows a good clean. Newspaper is considered the ‘green’ alternative to glass cleaners. Though environment ‘friendlier’, using the printed material for wiping has its share of setbacks. Here’s a good example. The person doing housecleaning in your New York apartment might have advised using a page of The New York Times instead of paper or cotton towel so to avoid having traces of lint on your mirrors. Thing is, you won’t see left behind lint instead, you might spot some traces of ink. Some newspapers are heavy on ink that when rubbed, let alone placed, on surfaces might cause some ink marks.
Hairspray: Not Solely For Your Crowning Glory
That bottle of spray you use to keep your head of hair in place is also believed to be good ink removers. Hairsprays work on fabrics blended with polyester and practically nothing else other than those. What makes ink stains fade is actually alcohol. But since the alcohol content of hair products have been significantly reduced to a minimum, perhaps for environment purposes above anything else, the notoriously hard to remove ink stain on your rayon blouse might not just come off even after too many a spritz of your strong-hold hairspray.
