Your friend’s birthday is near, and you still have not decided on what present to give. Between you are towns and cities, of hours on the road and numerous cutting trips. All you really want to convey is how special your friend is and how she is terribly missed. Thinking of a suitable gift is quite tricky for she does not prefer material gifts. Time is ticking and your energy is draining out. Then, you go inside a gift shop and find a gigantic greeting card with a big, bold message that says “Today is my birthday, and this is what my friends gave me.” You thought that the greeting card was amusing. An idea pops inside your head, and you decide that you would make a greeting card for your best friend located miles away.
You have already decided on creating a greeting card, but you are new to the deal of creating custom-made designs and printing it on your own workstation. You seem lost, with all the details you have to consider, and feeling daunted by the whole creative process. After all, it has been a long time since you picked your colors and pastels, and have not brushed up on your design software skills. Do not fret, though. Consider the whole process as an art challenge in which you have to showcase your creative skills to merit the approval of your receiver as well as your own pride for making a custom- greeting card from total scratch and zero experience. Here are some of the guidelines on how to design and print greeting card:
- Your greeting card does not have to follow the standard. You may want to deviate from the norm, and create your own. Usually, the print size would be 4.25 x 6.5” which is for a side fold card. But you can start with a new blank page size. Using your preferred design software, such as Adobe Photoshop or Corel Draw, or Microsoft Publisher for beginners, experiment on the print sizes and base it on your preference. Just make sure that your greeting card can be sent via standard mail. Otherwise, you may need to avail of special mailing services.
- Regarding the cover designs, the possibilities are endless. You may even want to make the cover beyond the ordinary, a one-of-a-kind, never-seen type of design. You may want to put a photograph you have taken yourself, a doodle which has a fun and animated appeal, a small painting using pastel or crayon, or graphic design or maybe an abstract drawing. You can use your creative skills to create a cover design. Also, you may want to consider adding an inspiring text or a humorous anecdote that can strike a chord to both you and the receiver.
- The total appearance of your greeting card will be dependent on the type of paper as well as ink you will use. If you want to have well-made greeting card, invest on quality materials. You may need to go for heavier paper stock which is ideal for a greeting card. For the ink, go for full color if you are using lots of hues and shades. You may have a disappointing result if you short shift yourself regarding materials. Take your time learning about the different paper stocks as well as ink types, so you will know what is best when you print greeting card.
