Ours was an almost happily-ever-after. All it took was a single Philippines phone card to end the romance we’ve worked on for most of our teen years. That and at least a hundred versions of the iniquitous “it’s not you, it’s me”. I swear I could’ve strangled myself with the phone cord, had mine not been cordless.
He continued living the American dream in The Big City while I flew across the Atlantic to join the “Doctors Without Borders” campaign in Asia. The dawn of discount international calling cards and free Skype-to-Skype calls allowed us hours of uninhibited talk time despite the distance. Right, it also gave him a free pass to break my heart without meeting me face to face. Though we would normally talk about anything and everything during our weekly gab fests, I still thought it was inappropriate to talk about breaking up. Breaking up wasn’t part of anything or everything – yes, I was very much in denial.
I thought it was unfair of him to dump me when I was all the way in Southeast Asia. As if rendering medical services to disaster-stricken communities abroad was no hard feat in itself, he just had to alleviate the hardship of being thousands of miles away from home. Just when I thought the purpose of buying a Pinoy phone card was to keep loved ones connected, he very much proved otherwise.
See, I’m not saying he has to fly all the way across the Atlantic to give me his ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ piece, but he could’ve at least told me that things were turning sour when I was still there right beside him. Or he could’ve waited until I flew back home, what is a year when you’re in love! But no, he just had to wait until I was overseas so he could tell me all his sentiments over the phone. It’s not as though his decision of splitting up with me was spur of the moment for he had a prepared speech, or so his voice suggested.
But as in any failed relationship, you get to learn valuable life lessons. What exactly did I learn from this unfortunate experience? If you can end a relationship by phone then you can most probably start one too using the same means. Now where can I get pinless calling cards on the cheap?
