Ours is a modern-day fairytale made for the books. I was Beauty, he was the Beast. I was this do-gooding, little-small-town Belle and he was my Prince charming in hideous disguise. Our story started in the library’s dim-lit hall, in the dark recesses many may not even know about at all. From then on our lives entwined, never have we left each other’s side.

The bookshelves in Atlanta GA Public Library never fail to comfort me. There was something about the woodsy scent of the antique-looking bookshelves GA that reminded me of home. Whenever I felt homesick, I would take a long commute to crouch beside the bookshelves and cabinets in Atlanta Public Library. I favored one corner, my private sanctuary. In there I’d forget about the quick passing of time, skip entire meals, neglect household chores and at times even doze off with an open book on-hand. In that safe haven I get to travel to a million places, meet a hundred different people and learn of things I may never get to do myself. In the sea of books I drowned myself, hoping no one would jump in and save me.

Then along came Beast stirring my tranquil sea. “Can I sit?” was his entrance piece; how I hated the way he said it. With his head held high, not a smile on his face, his piercing eyes locked with mine. Without a word escaping my lips he plopped right beside me, shoving my books to the side. “Excuse me!” I meant to say aloud though I never really said it. I just watched him in awe, perplexed with what I saw that not even my new found reads could distract me.

His back was leaned against the built in bookshelves in Atlanta Library, book poised loosely on one hand. I thought it rude his little move of just barging into my sanctuary. There were a million other nooks in this library but he chose to squat in mine. I continued to stare in hopes of shooing him away but his focus was beyond compare. His eyes didn’t leave the pages of his book and by his side I seemed nothing but an obsessed crook. I stood up and hurriedly left as if in shame, as though caught illegally squatting in his terrain. I never checked if he raised his eyes to look I just wished he would be sucked in by his book.

The night witnessed my fitful sleep, the thought of Beast my mind could not manage to let slip. I walked over to the affordable bookshelves in the Atlanta University dorm hoping to find solitude in of some sort. Until the wee hours of the morning I stood staring at the limited collection of books. With eyes closed I pulled out one hoping it would serve as some sign that would help enlighten my mind. Beauty and the Beast, the title read and that sent me smiling all the way back to bed.
