Whatever Happened To Me

Once there were dreams of chasing after fantasies, of living on the edge, of stopping at nothing. And then there were none. She liked grabbing opportunities, taking risks, making firm stands. Then she became me.

Mediocre, ordinary, commonplace were but a few words people would use to describe me. Gone was the confident, strong-willed risk-taker who got hold of a moving company in Surrey or movers in Burnaby when she wanted to go off and chase her dream. Now I consider it a chore to call piano movers in Vancouver when my boss asked me to do so.

Yes, I have a boss. And, yes, I once said I’ll never work for anyone. It honestly felt like light years ago when I still had the will to live.

Lost the will to live, ah, one would think I had some near-death experience, something oh-too-terrible that would make me think there was no purpose of being in this world alive and breathing. Well, you can say that is the case.

Whatever happened to you, those who knew me well would ask. I worked in an office, that’s what. After joyous years in the university, and more years soul-searching, thinking of what to pursue I ended up in a cubicle with a phone, a personal computer and a headset for company. And somehow I lost the drive to do anything else, thinking all the while there was no more to life.

Whatever happened to the thousand and one dreams I nursed? To the constant moving to Langley, Surrey or elsewhere to seek greener pastures? To the packing supplies in Vancouver that I hoarded in line with my many planned moves? To the job hunts from dawn ‘til dusk to find one that boasts both my skills and my passion? Oh, just like that they were gone.

Was it that bad, some would further question. Try investing time and resources in trying to figure out what you want, realizing what it really is and being told you were not meant for it. Try chasing after your dreams, finally reaching them and being sent back to reality. After trying, answer me: is it that bad?

Some say it was partly my fault. No one told me to start dreaming, to entertain risky thoughts, to never stop even when told to. It was all my doing, really, for I believed I was meant for great things when clearly I could only do so much.
