The best part of being part of “the future of Illinois television”: I get to use state-of-the-art technology for my newscasts. Touch screen monitors, auto-detecting cameras, wireless shenanigans and, my personal favorite, fully-equipped Dekalb limo service or top of the line limo service in Elgin whenever our crew does field work. How about complimentary smooth champagne to go? Yes, please.
The best of the best: the perks. And I’m not just talking handling savvy gadgets, cruising ‘round town in plush limos or hobnobbing with members of the country’s who’s who list. I’m talking excessive luncheons, extravagant events, full compensation (read: weekly reimbursements) and all expenses paid trips to any part of the globe. Yes, even to the most exotic locales previously unheard of.
What’s the catch, you ask? I no longer have a life outside of work. Forget about weekends, holidays, even mandatory union breaks for that matter. I remember missing out on my own birthday extravaganza ‘cause of an emergency shoot on-location. Thanks to the speedy Geneva airport transfer – shouldered by the network – I made it to the action-packed shootout on time. I also have a clear recall of my forced introduction to underground brothels. Our crew lugged heavy technical equip while decked in sky-high heels and barely-there dresses. For the record, I was the lone Jane in our little pack. Oh and how can I forget the segment wherein I had to drive a taxi in Sycamore and a couple of bachelorette party limos? Well, that was in line with our network’s promise of presenting news ‘in the most innovative way’. As our network’s big bosses would say, all in the name of pleasing our targeted progressive viewers.
It’s an understatement to say I’m enjoying my TV reporter stint. It’s more in the likes of I’m living my life to the fullest, really. Most people my age consider it a blessing to have a 9 to 5 minimum wage-paying job. How else, now, can I call my job other than ‘everyone’s dream’?
